Konstanz, Rock am See Festival
August 30, 1997 Konstanz, Rock am See

WHAT A NIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!!............FNM returned to my heart with an excellent show.......!

ok lets start from the beginning: Stefan arrived at my house at about 2:30 pm ...then we took a friend of mine at her house and started to Konstanz...because of the heavy traffic inside Konstanz we stopped earlier and did the rest by train.......
we arrived at the stadium when Skunk Anansie just started their gig.... hmmmmmm i dont like them anyway and their performance wasnt good blablabla....let's just forget about them ... this was the night of FNM.

well here comes the setlist:
INTRO (ALSO SPRACH.....)

  1. COLLISION
  2. MIDLIFE CRISIS
  3. GENTLE ART OF MAKING ENEMIES
  4. LAST CUP OF SORROW
  5. EVIDENCE
  6. EASY
  7. INTRODUCE YOURSELF
  8. GOT THAT FEELING
  9. ASHES TO ASHES
  10. HOME SICK HOME
  11. MOUTH TO MOUTH
  12. KING FOR A DAY
  13. EPIC
  14. NAKED IN FRONT OF THE COMPUTER
  15. JUST A MAN
    Encore
  16. STRIPSEARCH
  17. I STARTED A JOKE
  18. CAFFEINE

wellllll there were no REAL surprises in the setlist again but lets start from the beginning... the start was really brilliant...lots of energy (COLLISION, MIDLIFE, GENTLE)......LCOS really surprised me.....its one of the songs that really works good life (but doesnt work on the album in my opinion). Patton used some vocal delays on it, that he didnt use at the clubtour concert in Cologne ......then a slower part of the concert started (EVIDENCE and EASY).....Evidence was the only song with REAL mistakes of John Hudson (the solo aaaaarrgggh) but he really grows into the band ..... then a phase of two not working songs started.......INTRODUCE YOURSELF in my opinion didnt work at all......TWO reasons: 1. the hardcore fans heard that song several times and are sick of hearing it....2. all the other people didnt know it and were really irritated..... GOT THAT FEELING..didnt work at all...people tried to jump but then stopped because they couldnt get into it (i couldnt get into it either).. ASHES TO ASHES...again was really brilliant (i dont like that song on the album but it has become a live KILLER)

HOME SICK HOME made people clapping their hands and Patton reacted this way: "Show me the money...yeah show me the money" LOL..... but that song didnt work very well............... then MOUTH TO MOUTH (one of my fav songs of the album)......that really was crappy live.....bad keyboards and no good mood in the audience... KING FOR A DAY was a killer again with a great ending (Frankco mentioned that several times I agree)....EPIC was not that good..... NAKED was horrible........no reaction in the audience..........JUST A MAN (hehe i mean this is the best FNM song ever so what to say)....

then the encore:
STRIPSEARCH.........just amazing I STARTED A JOKE (thanx for playing that Billy): I LOVE IT!!!!! CAFFEINE (Funny intro with good samples)

so all in all a brilliant but NOT perfect concert........... please guys: try HELPLESS live...it will work much better then other songs from AOTY Björn.

I'm trying to add some things to Bjoern's review that I noticed during show. the audience was pretty funny. lots of the long hair touch metal fan kind. most of them were having a real good time and were hilarious to watch trying to walk or talk. the guys around me were all drunk. the festival seemed like a big Rammstein gathering. fans everywhere. eventually fnm fans but the majority obviously was the rammstein kind.

I didn't like Skunk Anansie either. their songs were too stereotype for me.

patton started the show with "eins zwei drei collision". I can totally see why people think of him as being drunk and all that. he totally did everything to appear drunk on stage, which actually fit the audience at the festival pretty well. They wore their black suits, except patton who was all in dirty white. I actually have to agree with Bjoern. I don't regret at all driving 4 hours to see that show. the sound was prefectly well balanced (this being the big disappointment at the cologne show in may) and it sounded soo good. the whole atmosphere was amazing. it was raining throughout the whole show but you didn't really notice that when being surrounded by people who're enjoying the show. they didn't know the lyrics but made up their own stuff and it was really fun seeing people barely able to stand or open their eyes to grunt the lines to epic or midlife crisis.

since recently there's this talk about dead spots at the shows I really have to say that Evidence/Easy/Introduce Yourself/Got That Feeling killed a lot. they were so much into the first songs (imagine the whole inner field of the stadium jumping to midlife crisis!). even though they all cheered up when easy started they did looked bored by not being able to "go wild". seemed like too many songs had either to many changes in rhythm or were wuite simply to fast to do anything to. the collective clapping and hand waving was also quite impressive (so that's what rock shows are about, :) king for a day was rreally good and had that breathing echoed experimental guitar ending. epic was probably the funniest since everyone in the stadium sung the chorus. Didn't recognize the cover Mike sung after epic. everyone was clapping and screaming so you couldn't hear him at all. Just a man beautiful as always with mike laughing right before the the ending blast.

Stripsearch really hit me in the face. my flesh began to creep.. hehe.. I mean you're in the audience soaked due to the rain and suddenly this amazing atmospheric drowning kind of sound appears when you're expecting it the least. I started a Joke and Caffeine were pretty good as well and I was really happy when I heard the dog samples from caffeine since I didn't really "expect" that song being played. most of the guys in the audience just watched the encore and didn't really jump or pogo at all

So much depends on how good it sounds when you're in the audience and how much the people are into it around you. being in a group of 20,000 people moving up and down is probably the greatest thing that can happen at a show. To join the song request train.. We Care A Lot should have been played. At a festival it would have fit perfect and probably Be Aggressive and leave out one of these un-jump-able songs. :)

It didn't bother me at all since the show was great. can't wait to see them again in November.
